Oracle 1Z0-047 Exam (Oracle Database SQL Expert) Detailed Information

Oracle SQL Certification: 1Z0-051 or ">1Z0-047?

Written by Matthew Morris 11 May 2012

Exams ">1Z0-047: Oracle Database SQL Expert and 1Z0-051: Oracle Database 11g: SQL Fundamentals I both satisfy the SQL requirement on the Oracle 11g DBA and 11g Developer tracks. Which one should you take? Oracle Certification Expert Matthew Morris has the answer.

On the Oracle Certification forum, these two exams generate a steady stream of questions from candidates asking which would be better for them to take.  In this article, I discuss the two tests, their similarities and differences and why you might want to take one over the other.

Either of these tests satisfies the SQL requirement for the "Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Professional" track and also the "Oracle PLSQL Developer Certified Associate" track.  Candidates following either the DBA or developer tracks generally take one of these two tests.  I’ll note briefly that at this time there is a third option, the much older “1Z0-007: Introduction to Oracle9i SQL”.  This test was written against Oracle 9i as the name suggests.  It has not been updated for newer releases, and will likely be retired in the not-too-distant future.  It is not a test that I would recommend pursuing.  Both ">1Z0-047 and 1Z0-051 are geared towards SQL against an Oracle 11G database, and the test objectives for the two on the Oracle Education site have a great deal of commonality.  It's not surprising that there is confusion over which to take.

Some of the difference between the two is due to the content.  The remainder is the level of difficulty of the exams and the degree to which you must be familiar with Oracle SQL.  The SQL Fundamentals exam is built around forty-one topics listed on the Oracle Education site.  The topics aren't 'simple', but they certainly fit the definition of 'fundamentals'.  They are the basics that Oracle SQL developers really should be familiar with.  The SQL Expert topics include thirty-eight pulled directly from SQL Fundamentals, plus an additional thirty-eight beyond that.  The majority of the exam questions come from the second set, but anything from the first set is fair game.  This alone would tell you that it's a much more complex exam to study for.  In addition, a fair number of the ‘Expert’ topics are on subjects that even experienced SQL developers use only on rare occasions.

The differences in the two tests go deeper than that.  The SQL Fundamentals exam is fairly straightforward in its questions and answers.  For a given question, answer A may be obviously correct because answers B, C, and D have SQL errors that make them obviously invalid (assuming you know your basic SQL).  The exhibits are simple; the SQL fairly short; and the questions largely fact-based.  By contrast, in the SQL Expert exam, the questions tend to be much trickier.  The wrong answers aren't quite as obviously wrong.  They are likely to include SQL statements that will execute with no error, but without returning data that answers the question.  You have to be able to think like the Oracle SQL parser to determine specifically what a given SQL statement will do when executed.  The SQL and associated exhibits are more complex and more of the questions are experience-based.

There is definitely a benefit in taking the SQL Expert exam instead of Fundamentals.  You will not only fulfill the SQL requirement for the DBA and developer tracks but also get an immediate standalone certification (Oracle Database: SQL Certified Expert).  However, you also run a considerably greater risk of failing the exam.  For this reason, I would advise that candidates who are relatively new to SQL pursue the SQL Fundamentals exam.

Some candidates making this decision are experienced SQL developers who are well familiar with most or all of the topics in the SQL Fundamentals exam.  For these individuals, I would recommend skipping to ">1Z0-047.  There is no benefit to passing the lower-level test if you have sufficient knowledge to pass the Expert exam.  Whichever you choose, good luck on the test.

About the Matthew Morris is an experienced DBA and developer. He holds Oracle DBA Certifications for releases 7, 8i, 9i, 10G and 11G; and Oracle Expert Certifications for SQL and Application Express; and is an Oracle PLSQL Developer Certified Associate. He is the author of several Oracle certification guides. His Web site, .oraclecertificationprepm, is dedicated to providing links to resources for Oracle certification preparation.

    Oracle Database SQL Expert (">1Z0-047)…

I can see this post degenerating into a rant, so I would like to preemptively appologize to anyone involved in the production of this exam. I’m guessing it’s a real pain to develop these exams, especially when some ass like me starts moaning about them. Added to that, I’m guessing the word “Expert” means slightly different things to different people…

I’ve been barking on recently that in my opinion, the most important skill required by any PLSQL developer is SQL, with knowledge of PLSQL itself coming in second place. Having recently taken the “Oracle Database 11g: Advanced PLSQL (1Z0-146)” exam (mentioned here), I thought it was a little hypocritical not to sit the “Oracle Database SQL Expert (">1Z0-047)” exam as well, so this morning I did just that.

Here are some of my thoughts on the exam, in no particular order of importance:

  • Regular Expressions: I think it is important that people understand what regular expressions can do and when it is appropriate to use them, but I don’t think it is necessary to test people on the meta-characters themselves. That’s what the docs are for.
  • Analytic Functions: No sign of them in my questions from the pool. Surely analytic functions are more important than regular expression meta-characters.
  • The majority of the exhibits were pointless. It seems like they were placed there to waste the time of people with bad exam technique, rather than to assist in answering the question. This was especially true of the schema diagrams, which I only referred to once when the datatype of one of the columns was important.
  • Several of the questions could be answered without reading the question at all, as the incorrect answers jumped out at you because they contained blatantly incorrect statements.
  • Several of the questions included the “ANY” and “ALL” comparison conditions, which are barely mentioned in the documentation (here)*. I guess these are only included in Oracle because the are part of ANSI SQL. I can’t remember ever using them in Oracle or seeing them being used by others. I have come across them in MySQL so I knew what they were for, which was fortunate.
  • There were lots of questions that included DML against inline views rather than directly against tables. It got to the point where I felt like, “If it’s got braces in it I’m going to tick it”.
  • I very quickly turned into a grumpy old man and started to rush through the exam, spending most of my time thinking about writing this blog post, rather than the exam itself. 🙂

In the end I got 96%, which I guess means I got 3 questions wrong out of the 70. Serves me right for rushing it so I could come home and bitch about it. 🙂

So I am now an “Oracle Database: SQL Certified Expert” as well as a grumpy old shite…

    Cheers

    Tim…

    uCertify Oracle 11g DBA OCA - ">1Z0-047

    Pros

Basically simple, though a real manual would help with more advanced features. I get the impression it's a lot like MS Paint, which I've never messed with.BE SURE TO READ THE README! It has a quick summary of the primary functions and shortcuts.

    Cons

A more complete instruction document or a couple of tutorials would be really helpful.

    Summary

I like it enough to have donated $10 to the creator. Great deal!

    Pros

    Easy to use!

    Cons

    None I could find.

    Summary

Malware complaints have more to do with CNET than anything else.

    Pros

reviews for actual editor looks good - BUT IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S FULL OF "ADD ONS B.S."

    Cons

t started trying to take full control of my PC - CTRL ALT DEL wouldn't even bring up task manager! If I had a reset button I would have hit it, but I had to wait for the shut down button to respond and reboot.

If it had been successful in loading a bunch of garbage, I would have been very pisst!

Maybe you downloaded it behind a proxy? No known antivirus software detects any problems.

    Pros

    Creates icons but...

    Cons

Do not even download this. There were dangerous adware and other things that can potentially joepardize your computer security. It even disabled my AVG.

    Summary

I agree, this software and the developer should not even be in Cnet

    Pros

None - I never used it

    Cons

Installs Sweetpacks [sic] on firefox, chrome, & ie. No asking. Cannot be easily removed. Dangerous. Disables the chrome extension trash and disable icons. Must remove the program as well to get this all off. Also, resets the search engines and home pages for all three browsers

This is a really nasty install and developer should be immediately banned from Cnet forwever.

    Pros

    I have not used it.

    Cons

After having to remove extra programs that it does not warn you that it is going to install, I don't even want to use it.

    Summary

It asks you if you want to install some toolbar when you select advanced installation but does not warn or ask about installing other programs that immediately install and run on your computer. Then when you remove the items, it force opens a browser window so it can terrorize you some more. I'd rather pay for a program up front than have a piece of software install things without permission or warning.

    Pros

Wide range of tools and capabilitiesGUI and menu self explanatory, rarely need to see help fileAble to open more than one instance at a time.

    Cons

Newest version: I can't find a way to float tools et al and position where desired like I did in earlier version.Need to know how to save as an .ico file (convert image to ico file setup, then save as. Once you learn it is easy each time.

    Summary

    Pros

It has reduced some pictures to icons with EXCELLENT clarity. It is all I need. It was easy to figure out without using the help file, as is my habit :)

    Cons

I can't think of any so far

    Summary

    Great product

    Updated on May 10, 2014

I am seeing a lot of negative reviews. Sad. The scumware in the install package is from Cnet, not Greenfish and is is easily declined although there are quite a few. Just go slow and decline them. I have not seen it install anything into the browser. I am on windows 81 x64 with Chrome as my browser. If that even was an earlier issue, it is gone now

    Pros

Nice startup screen.Good all-round.Professional quality icon-editor for free. One of the better editors out there.

    Cons

I prefer IcoFX, but they put me on a 30-day trial, so I switched to Greenfish.A little old-fashioned.The menus are a little confusing at first.

    Summary

I used to use IcoFX, but when I updated it, they moved me into a 30-day trial that I didn't like. I went looking for alternatives and so far, Greenfish icon editor is the best I've found. Its great for making professional-looking icons, and has many advanced functions and features.
